Amos 4:1-13

Seek God’s heart by acknowledging his acts and
you will find the person of God.

 

Discussion Starter:

  • Tell a story of a time when somebody did something for you and you saw who they really were because of it.

 

Read Amos 4:1-13:

  • What words/phrases/concepts stand out to you?
  • What questions do you have regarding the text?
  • If you could sum up the passage in one phrase, what would you say?
  • How does this text apply to your own life?

 

God’s Heart (4:1-5):

  • Why is God upset that they built other altars?
  • What altars have you erected in your life that say, “God and…”?
  • Why does God want your complete allegiance?
  • Who is god’s heart breaking for?
  • Does your heart match God’s heart for people?

 

Acknowledge his acts (4:6-11):

  • List the things God said he did for Israel.
  • Why did God do those things for/to Israel?
  • Make a list of the things God has done for you.
  • Why do you think God has done these things?

 

Person of God (4:12-13):

  • What do we learn about God when we look at his punishment of Israel?
  • What do we learn about God when we look at the cross?
  • Knowing God’s heart, what can you do to display it to others this week?

Read Amos 3:1-15. As you read, use the following to help facilitate discussion:
  • What words/phrases/concepts stand out to you?

What does it mean to be “God’s chosen people”?
  • Why did god want them to live to such a high standard?
  • Are you living up to the standard of being God’s chosen people?
 
Do you believe God is always in control?
  • How have you seen him in control?
  • How does him being in control impact you personally?
 
Why would God be so upset at his people for sinning?
  • Define sin. Make a list of sins.
  • Is God justified in punishing sin? Why or why not?
  • Have you allowed Jesus to take God’s punishment for you?
  • How has your life changed because of Jesus taking your punishment?
